In 1900 some of the best farmland in Rensselaer County was flooded to create the Tomhannock Reservoir. Some farms were moved by horse teams over greased logs, many of them remain to this day. Some farms were abandoned to the flood. Today, when the waters of the reservoir cry out under the burden of thick winter ice, local legends say that it's the sounds of the ghost farms under 12.3 billion gallons of dark water.
